CMI and the European Union

Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) has a long-standing cooperation with the European Union since early 2000 in building-up EU mediation capacities.

CMI’s approach in this regard is based on two main points:

• Organizing thematic workshops and exchanges of lessons learned between the EU and other regional organisations such as the AU, OSCE, ASEAN and UN.
• Concrete engagement and co-operation in conflict areas where the EU has an extremely active role as a mediator or as supporter of peace processes (Aceh, Caucasus, Moldova, Middle East and Africa).

Through its office in Brussels, CMI has been regularly engaging with the EU institutions such as the EU parliament, European External Action Service, EU Commission and the various representations of EU Member States.

CMI’s strategy aims at supporting further professionalization of the practice of international peace mediation and developing concrete capacities for the use of international and regional actors as well as facilitating the information sharing, networking and co-operation with the EU.
