africa

CMI works in partnership with key African organizations to support peace processes and the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa.

CMI’s decade-long experiences in mediation and peace processes, as well as its unique methodologies, add value to these partnerships.

  • CMI supports the African Union and African sub-regional orgDSC_0296_modanizations in responding to conflicts through preventive diplomacy and peace mediation. We work on peace mediation support with the African Union Conflict Management Division and ACCORD at the continental level. We also work on peace mediation in cooperation with the West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

  • CMI supports confidence building among groups and peoples within post-war societies. We, for example, work in partnership with the Government of South Sudan and local partners to support South Sudan in exploring common vision for the future of South Sudan.
  • CMI promotes the strengthening of state-society relationships in order to facilitate the implementation of peace agreements. We work, for example, with the Government of Liberia to improve governance for service delivery.

In addition to representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), civil society experts working in the field of GBV in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Liberia, and Côte D’Ivoire participated in the workshop. The two-day workshop also benefitted from the presence and insights of Elisabeth Rehn, Finnish Minister of State and former UN Under-Secretary-General, and the Ambassador of Finland to Nigeria, Riitta Korpivaara.

The West African sub-region has been, for the last two decades, one of the most conflict prone regions of the world. It unfortunately also lays claim to two of the most brutal civil wars in modern history. The consequences on human life and social and political development have been immense. Since the 1990s, the Economic Community for West African states (ECOWAS) has been at the forefront of preventive diplomacy as part of the quest for lasting peace in West Africa.

The 'Improving West African Capacities for Mediation and Peace Processes Project', was designed and is being implemented in partnership with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), and in collaboration with ECOWAS, to develop and strengthen mediation and peace process capacities in West Africa during the next three years.

Gender-Based Violence and Peace Mediation in West Africa

Beach_in_MonroviaThe absence of women from peace negotiations and insufficient expertise on gender-based violence in peace mediation teams limit the success of peace processes.

CMI and the West African Network for Peacebuilding have joined forces in order to promote professional practice in these areas. Through collection and comparative analysis of experiences from West African conflicts and peace mediation processes, the project develops recommendations on how to address these questions effectively.

The joint project targets West African mediation experts working on violent conflicts around Africa, and it was launched in January 2011.

ICT4Statebuilding: Governance out of a Box

Two_Women_and_cellphone

Implementing sustainable peace necessitates a functional public administration that is able to provide basic services to citizens and rebuild the social contract between citizens and the state.

CMI's ICT4Statebuilding program identifies and tests ICT solutions that can be used to support the rebuilding of a functioning public administration in the post-conflict phase. The program also develops analytical tools for planning, evaluating, and acquiring suitable ICT-based solutions.

The first project launched under this program is Governance out of a Box in Liberia.
