New Projects Begin in 2011 (21.01.2011)

In addition to CMI’s on-going projects, 2011 brings the start of several new initiatives. Many of these new projects build and expand upon the work done in previous years, while some open up new dimensions to CMI’s work. In total CMI now runs 13 projects in over 20 countries.

The Africa Program is expanding its activities on peace mediation and conflict resolution. New projects are in the fields of dialogue, gender-based violence, and enterprise architecture. More information will become available later in the year.

The Black Sea and Central Asia Program is starting a two-year program in Afghanistan titled “Supporting sub-national approaches of political reintegration in Afghanistan.” The project builds on the idea that, for lasting peace, a real political process is needed in Afghanistan. Widely discussed financial incentives for reintegration are insufficient in themselves. There need to be other, political, incentives for reconciliation and reintegration. CMI aims to look how these processes could be supported by facilitated dialogue or whether sub-national governance or traditional tribal structures could be utilized to that end.

Finally, the Middle East Program is starting a three-year project in Yemen. This project aims at supporting dialogue processes in the country.

To support the increasing number of endeavors, CMI has hired new employees both at the Helsinki Headquarters as well as in the regional offices. CMI extends a warm welcome to the newcomers!
